Top Tips

It's the time of the year when we all want to look our best…

Looking great from top-to-toe on holiday needs preparation and planning - and when it comes to hair and beauty care, a little thinking in the months before you jet off can pay off. Here UPTOWN's own makeover king and celebrity stylist Taylor Ferguson reveals the dos and don'ts for looking sensational on your next sunshine break…

Cutting it fine
Ensure you get a good haircut before a holiday. That helps minimise the time you're going to be staring into a mirror prepping your hair. A good cut will look good even if you're just out of the pool or sea.

Drink, drink, drink - but no booze
I mean water - two litres of it a day. Your skin will reap the benefit. Remember flying - and the chances are the flight could be longer than usual - can dehydrate so top up with water during the journey. The hotter climate can also play havoc with your skin so keep it moisturised - from the inside out. If your face starts feeling dry, spray on Yon-Ka lotion - it will make a difference.

It's a condition
You must condition and protect your hair whenever you've been swimming as the sea salt or the chlorine will play havoc. Whenever you come out of the water try to shower and re-apply the protection products.

Blow-dry to perfection
Use a silicone blow dry lotion in place of your usual mousse when drying your hair. It will help keep it looking fantastic - even after a day exposed to the sun's rays.

Colour it right
If you have your hair highlighted or coloured, you can leave it up to 48 hours before you head off into the sun. That gives it time to 'settle' and be at its optimum when you arrive and unpack that suitcase!

Intensify
At least once a day when you're shampooing and conditioning your hair, pop on a plastic shower cap or a plastic bag over your conditioned hair. The heat in the shower and the plastic will help intensify and re-moisture what can be extremely dried out hair.

Product protection
Use hair care products specially developed for use in the sun. They'll have UV filters and will offer protection from frizziness.

Keep it smooth
Waxing is important so have it done during the week before departure. It guarantees that silky smooth look and feel and if it's a fortnight's break then re-growth will be at the absolute minimum throughout.

Fake it!
A white skin in a hot country can stand out - and perhaps doesn't look so appealing under the bright sunlight. Fake it every time. I would recommend St Tropez for the most natural looking tan that lasts between five and seven days. It's ideal if you have two treatments within 48 hours done at least a day before you leave - and remember there's no danger of any skin damage. And remember if you do expose yourself to the sun, wear a very high protection factor - or else cover up!
